Welcome to the Department of Psychology!

Psychology at the University of Calgary is engaged in a wide range of exciting activities. Our research laboratories reflect the diversity of interests within our department. As part of its research and educational activities, the Department also offers graduate programs leading to the M.Sc. and the Ph.D. degrees. We have a nationally accredited Clinical Psychology program. We also offer a graduate specialization in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and graduate degrees in the areas of emphasis in Cognition and Neuroscience, and Social and Theoretical Psychology. Our graduate student funding is among the best in the country. M.Sc. students are guaranteed funding for two years, while Ph.D. students are funded for their first three years. We also support our graduate students with mentorship, strong course offerings and research support.

Our department is one of the most active teaching units within the University, as psychology is a very popular undergraduate area of study. More than 2,550 individual students will take a Psychology undergraduate course in 2010- 2011, as there are about 725 undergraduate Psychology majors in pursuit of either a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree. The Department also has an Honours program for selected undergraduates, who complete a research thesis in their final year of studies. We also partner with other academic units on campus to support programs in Community Rehabilitation, Health Sciences and Mind Sciences, and Neurosciences. As well, we support an extension program for students to complete the BA degree through Red Deer College.

In addition to the research and teaching activities of the department, we also actively contribute to the university, the community and the discipline of psychology. These contributions include active participation in the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, journal boards and positions, research agency roles, and many other national and international activities. We have two student organizations, one each for the undergraduate and graduate students. This is a vital department, whose members are active in generating and sharing psychological knowledge.
